The album ‘Getz Au Go Go’, which was recorded in 1964 at two concerts in the Café Au Go Go in Greenwich Village and in Carnegie Hall, shows the tenor saxophonist at a musical crossroads. While one half of the recording with guest singer Astrud Gilberto is still dedicated to bossa nova, the other half focuses on his new quartet with newcomer Gary Burton on vibraphone.
Stan Getz was still part of the cool jazz scene in the 1950s, but he had a significant influence on the bossa nova hype in the USA in the 1960s after he had a worldwide hit with Getz/Gilberto and the song ‘The Girl from Ipanema’.
He built on this style with the new Stan Getz Quartet and singer Astrud Gilberto. The Brazilian influence was pushed back and the jazz became more American, but without losing its beauty and joie de vivre.
This is the recording of the premiere concert at the Cafe Au Go Go in New York on 19 August 1964, a cafe with an intimate atmosphere and warm sound, which also benefits the recording enormously. The musicians are Stan Getz on tenor saxophone, Gary Burton on vibraphone, Gene Cherico on bass and Joe Hunt on drums. Astrud Gilberto lends her wonderful voice to the ensemble.
