À commencer par Moonfleet et Jamaica Inn, nous avons tous en mémoire ces contes de naufrageurs attirant les vaisseaux sur les récifs pour qu’ils s’y brisent. Le gros plan des lentilles d’un phare tournant sur elles-mêmes sur lequel s’achève Atlantiques, y fait immanquablement penser. Il n’y a pas de port derrière ce phare, seulement la nuit et l’eau glacée de la mort, le mirage d’une Europe où la survie serait plus aisée, mais inaccessible, ombre décharnée d’un Eldorado qui n’en est pas un, même si, comme toute puissance occidentale elle se nourrit de l’épuisement du tiers monde. « Au revoir, je pars mourir, ça ne se dit pas », confie sur la plage Seligne à ses amis, rescapé d’un naufrage qui le hante, mais bien décidé à repartir tant survivre au Sénégal est devenu une chose impossible. Que ce soit cet adieu à ses amis ou le récit de sa première traversée, la nuit l’enveloppe déjà. La lumière n’est plus de son monde.
