Humour and music. If there were a lecture on this subject, everyone would be bored to death. I think we are never going to hear the sentence “I can’t find any new serious jazz, everybody is just goofing around.” That won’t happen. Jazz is serious music. Don’t get me wrong. Jazz musicians do have fun when they play together. But the fun stays on the stage. It doesn’t spread to the audience. Which is where Stefano Bollani comes in. Stefano’s goal is to take the audience into the fun. And not only the players. With some little magic tricks and gestures, he makes sure the audience is included in everything that is happening. I want to do exactly the same. Stefano is like Italy. Light, humorous, full of great melodies, dramatic if needed, proud to be part of the long and rich tradition but eager to try new ways. I am extremely happy to present this celebration of Italian music with the best possible duo partner, il Maestro Bollani.

When I first heard iiro’s playing in the early 90’s, I could already hear his dazzlingly mature piano technique. Then, step by step, I discovered many more facets to him. Through his improvisations on John Lennon, Gershwin and his own music, I came to value his incredible preparation and his insatiable curiosity. Then, when I watched a TV show with him as host, I saw his wonderful sense of humour too. We finally met for the first time in 2013 in Helsinki when he invited me to his piano festival. We played just one song but both knew that this great moment would need something special, since we share so many musical loves. Gershwin? Chick Corea? Tango? No, we chose the “Family Guy” cartoon theme. “Well, iiro is definitely a family guy for me,” I laughed. Then, later, his funny, creative, smart album “My Finnish calendar” made me realise I had found a musical twin brother. And that made me think: “We must try and play together”. We did it. We had a lot of fun. And that night became this recording. During a musical career, you meet musicians who are different from you. But how much more fun to share the stage with a guy with a very similar musical taste and approach. And yet someone who is always going to surprise me.
